12 rallies held around the world this past weekend to protest the drive hunt, live capture, and senseless slaughter of dolphins and whales at the killing “cove” in Taiji, Japan.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOVEMBER 28, 2012 — Animal rights activists, dolphin supporters, and concerned citizens all around the world participated in 11 city rallies in 8 countries and a global online rally from November 23 to 26, 2012, to peacefully protest the dolphin and whale slaughter in Taiji, Japan, made famous by the 2010 Academy Award winning documentary The Cove. Participating cities included London, Santiago, Los Angeles, Canberra, Tokyo, Milan, San Antonio, Vancouver, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Miami. The global online rally was conducted through the social networking websites, Facebook.com and Twitter.com.

A grassroots effort greatly aided by social networking, each rally was organized by individuals committed to the dolphin cause. Each city rally and the online rally had a Facebook event page set up to aid in spreading the word online. All rally event pages were posted on the website http://rhapsody3.wix.com/tweet4taiji, managed by Heather Dimsey and Lydia Bloms, two Melbourne mothers who have been on Twitter and Facebook, following Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s campaign in Taiji: Operation Infinite Patience, conducted by the Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians.

The 11 city rallies took place over a four-day period, from November 23 to 26, 2012, starting in London’s protest outside the Embassy of Japan and ending with a rally in Miami, Florida. The Tokyo rally was the first-ever public protest held in the country of Japan against Taiji’s dolphin and whale slaughter. According to Agence France-Presse, about 50 anti-whaling activists marched in Tokyo while 30 nationalists counter-protested on the sidewalk along the march route. A Taiji Dolphin Action Day is also planned in South Africa for November 30, 2012.

The online rally, hosted by Call of the Cove, was held on November 24, 2012 to show support for all city rallies. Dolphin activists who could not attend a city rally protested via Facebook.com and Twitter.com, using the Taiji awareness hashtag, #tweet4taiji. Each hour of the protest was dedicated to a specific theme: showing support for all Cove Guardians; protesting Yahoo! (which profits from the sale of dolphin & whale meat products sold through Yahoo! Japan); advocating for cetacean rights; contacting political entities (including the Prime Minister of Japan and local Japanese embassies) to urge the end of Taiji’s dolphin slaughter; and advocating for cruelty-free and captivity-free eco-tourism in Taiji.

Taiji is known as the “ground zero” for live, captive dolphins supplied to marine parks and swim-with-dolphin programs around the world. The remaining dolphins, who are not selected by dolphin trainers for a life of captivity, are brutally and inhumanely slaughtered for human consumption, even though the meat contains toxic levels of mercury. Over 20,000 dolphins in Japan are slaughtered in this inhumane manner annually.
